Coffee every morning, a glass of red wine with dinner, years of tea, or simply time can gradually shift the color of natural teeth from bright to yellowed or dull. These changes build so slowly that many people only notice them in a photo or under bathroom lighting. In-office teeth whitening is a direct way to address that kind of discoloration, and it's the whitening option we provide here at Valley Dental Care in Mayfield, New York.

Teeth whitening lightens the natural color of your tooth enamel by treating surface and deeper stains that brushing alone can't remove. With our In-Office approach, the treatment happens in our dental chair with our team overseeing each step. We prepare your mouth so the whitening is applied to your teeth and your gums are protected.

Patients come to us for whitening for many different reasons. Some are preparing for a wedding, graduation, job interview, or family photos and want a brighter smile by a certain date. Others have no event in mind and are just tired of stains from coffee, tea, or tobacco. We also see patients who are partway through a larger cosmetic plan, such as a smile makeover, and want to whiten their natural teeth first so that any new restorations can be matched to the brighter shade.

Whitening works best on healthy teeth and gums, so we begin with an evaluation. If it's been a while since your last visit, a dental exam and dental cleaning come first. A cleaning removes plaque and surface buildup so the whitening can reach the enamel evenly, and the exam lets us look for cavities, gum problems, or worn areas that should be treated before any cosmetic work. If we find gum disease, we can address it here through treatments like scaling and root planing.

It also helps to understand what whitening can and can't change. Whitening acts on natural tooth structure. It does not lighten crowns, bridges, porcelain veneers, composite bonding, or fillings. If you have restorations on your front teeth, we'll talk through how whitening would look next to them. Some discoloration also responds less to whitening, such as grayish staining or color that comes from inside the tooth. In those cases, we may discuss other cosmetic options we offer, including composite bonding or porcelain veneers, during a cosmetic smile-design consultation.

Aftercare and Keeping Your Results

Right after treatment, your teeth are especially prone to picking up new stains. For the first stretch afterward, it's wise to limit dark-colored foods and drinks and avoid tobacco. Some patients notice temporary tooth sensitivity after whitening. If that happens, let us know so we can suggest ways to stay comfortable.

How long your brighter smile lasts depends largely on daily habits. These are the habits that make the biggest difference:

  • Rinsing with water after coffee, tea, or red wine
  • Brushing twice daily and flossing every day
  • Keeping up with regular cleanings and exams at our office
  • Cutting back on or quitting tobacco products

Regular professional cleanings play a real role here. Our hygienist removes the surface staining that builds up between visits, which helps keep your teeth looking their best. When you're ready for a touch-up down the road, we can talk about timing during a routine appointment.

Paying for Teeth Whitening

We are an out-of-network office, which means we don't participate directly with insurance plans. If you have dental coverage, we will file claims on your behalf so you can use your out-of-network benefits where they apply. Whitening is often considered cosmetic, so we recommend checking with your plan about what it covers before treatment.

We gladly welcome self-pay patients, and we also accept CareCredit financing for those who would like to spread the cost of treatment over time. If you're combining whitening with other cosmetic or restorative work, our team can review the full plan with you so you know what to expect before we begin.
