It's been a while since your last visit. Your teeth feel fine, nothing hurts, and you brush every day, but you notice a rough spot behind your lower front teeth that your toothbrush never seems to reach. That spot is often hardened buildup, and it's exactly what a professional dental cleaning is designed to remove. At Valley Dental Care in Mayfield, cleanings are one of the most common reasons patients come through our door, and they're the foundation of everything else we do to keep smiles healthy.

A dental cleaning is a preventive visit in which our dental hygienist removes plaque and tartar from the surfaces of your teeth, including the areas along and just below the gumline that brushing and flossing miss. Plaque is soft and sticky, and when it isn't removed it hardens into tartar, also called calculus. Once tartar forms, a toothbrush can't take it off. It takes professional instruments and a trained hand.

Cleanings help nearly everyone. We see patients of all ages, starting at age 2, so a cleaning at our office might be a toddler's first gentle introduction to the dental chair, a teenager's routine checkup, or an adult's regular preventive care. Parents are welcome in the treatment room with their children, and we treat children with special healthcare needs. Patients who wear dental implants also benefit, because the gum tissue around an implant needs regular attention too.

Most patients are good candidates for a standard cleaning, but your gum health shapes what kind of cleaning is right for you. If our team finds signs of gum disease, such as deeper pockets between the gums and teeth or tartar extending well below the gumline, a routine cleaning may not be enough. In that case we may recommend scaling and root planing, a deeper cleaning that reaches below the gums, followed by periodontal maintenance visits to keep the area stable. We offer gum disease treatment and laser dentistry here as well, so you don't need to start over with a new office if you need more than a routine cleaning.

It also helps to know that a cleaning usually goes hand in hand with a dental exam. While the hygienist focuses on removing buildup, Dr. Gregory Liberatore or Dr. Jonathan Montag reviews the health of your teeth and gums. If they find a cavity, a worn filling, or a cracked tooth, we can talk with you about fillings, crowns, or other restorative options. You'll leave knowing where things stand.

Who Benefits From Regular Cleanings

Because buildup develops for everyone, cleanings fit a wide range of needs. Patients who often come to us for this care include:

  • Children and teens building healthy habits, including those who may benefit from dental sealants
  • Adults who want to keep up with preventive care between exams
  • Patients with a history of gum disease who need ongoing periodontal maintenance
  • People with dental implants who need implant maintenance
  • Patients preparing for cosmetic work such as teeth whitening, composite bonding, or porcelain veneers, which start best on a clean, healthy foundation

Families from Gloversville, Northville, Broadalbin, Amsterdam, Speculator, and the surrounding area can often schedule care for several family members with us, since our general dentistry practice sees patients from early childhood through adulthood.

Aftercare and What to Expect Afterward

After a routine cleaning, most people go right back to their day. Your teeth will usually feel noticeably smoother, especially along the gumline where tartar was removed. Some patients notice mild gum tenderness or brief sensitivity to cold, particularly if there was more buildup than usual or if it had been a while since the last visit. If you had a deeper cleaning, our team will give you specific instructions for the days that follow.

The results of a cleaning last only as long as your home care supports them. Brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and returning on the schedule we recommend all help keep plaque from hardening again. If you have questions about technique, such as how to floss around a bridge or clean around an implant, ask your hygienist during your visit. That kind of practical guidance is part of how we deliver care.

Payment and Financing

Valley Dental Care is an out-of-network office, which means we don't participate in insurance plans directly. We do file claims on your behalf so you can use your out-of-network benefits, which takes much of the paperwork off your plate. We also welcome self-pay patients, and we offer financing through CareCredit for patients who prefer to spread out costs, especially if a cleaning reveals a need for additional treatment.

If you aren't sure how your coverage applies, our front office team can walk you through how claims are filed and what to expect before your appointment.
