A small cavity rarely announces itself. It might be a twinge when you sip iced coffee, a spot where floss keeps catching, or nothing at all until your next checkup. Catching decay at that early stage matters because a filling can repair a tooth while it is still mostly healthy. At Valley Dental Care in Mayfield, we place dental fillings for patients of all ages, and we want you to understand exactly what that care involves before you sit down in our chair.
A dental filling repairs a tooth that has lost structure to decay or minor damage. When a cavity forms, bacteria break down the hard outer layers of the tooth and leave a weakened, hollow area behind. To repair it, we remove the damaged portion, clean the space, and fill it with restorative material. This seals the tooth against further decay and restores its shape so you can chew comfortably again.
Fillings help a wide range of people. A child with a first cavity in a baby tooth, a teenager who struggles to brush around back molars, an adult whose older filling has started to wear, and an older patient whose gums have receded and exposed the root surface can all benefit. Because we see patients from age 2 and up, our families often schedule children and parents with the same team. Our dentists, Dr. Gregory Liberatore and Dr. Jonathan Montag, evaluate each tooth individually rather than applying one approach to everyone.
Patients usually ask us the same practical questions. Does the cavity really need treatment now? Is the tooth too far gone for a filling? Will it be uncomfortable? Decay does not reverse once it has broken through the enamel, and it tends to spread. Treating a small cavity is generally simpler than waiting until the damage reaches deeper into the tooth. During your dental exam, we look at the size and location of the decay and explain what we see so you can make an informed choice.
Sometimes a filling is not the best option. If decay or a crack has weakened too much of the tooth, a crown may protect it better. Our on-site dental lab and our experience with crowns, bridges, and other restorative work mean we can talk through those alternatives in the same office. If a tooth is cracked or painful, we also offer emergency appointments, so you don't have to wait weeks to find out what's going on. For younger patients, parents are welcome in the treatment room, and we treat children with special healthcare needs. These details often make the visit easier for the whole family.
Caring for Your Filling Afterward
Your numbness should wear off within a few hours. Until then, chew carefully so you don't bite your cheek or tongue. Some people notice mild sensitivity to hot or cold in the days after treatment. If your bite feels uneven, or if discomfort lingers rather than gradually easing, call us so we can check the tooth and adjust the filling if needed.
Over the long term, you care for a filled tooth the same way you care for the rest of your smile. Brush twice a day, floss daily, and keep up with your regular dental cleanings. Those visits let our hygienist and dentists monitor the edges of your fillings, where new decay can start. Our preventive care, including dental sealants for children, helps reduce the chance that you'll need more fillings in the future.
Payment, Insurance, and Financing
We are an out-of-network office, which means we do not take insurance directly. However, we file claims on your behalf so you can use any out-of-network benefits your plan provides. We want cost to be clear before treatment begins, so we're happy to discuss your options:
- We submit out-of-network insurance claims for you
- We welcome self-pay and cash patients
- We offer financing through CareCredit
If you have questions about your plan or what to expect financially, our front office team can walk you through it. They take the time to answer your questions so the paperwork doesn't add to your stress.
