If you've noticed a little pink in the sink after brushing, gums that feel tender, or breath that stays stale no matter what you try, you may be wondering whether it's worth a visit. We hear these concerns often at our Mayfield office, and we always say the same thing: asking early is a smart move. Gum disease treatment helps you understand what's happening below the gumline and gives you a clear plan for caring for the tissue that supports your teeth.
Gum disease is an infection and inflammation of the gums and the structures that hold your teeth in place. It usually starts quietly, with plaque and hardened tartar collecting along and beneath the gumline. In its earlier stage, often called gingivitis, the gums may look puffy or bleed easily. As it advances, pockets can form between the gums and teeth, where bacteria are harder to reach with a toothbrush or floss.
Patients come to us for many reasons. Some notice symptoms on their own. Others learn about changes during a routine dental exam and cleaning with our hygienist. Still others are already living with crowns, bridges, dentures, or dental implants and want to protect that investment. Because we see patients of all ages and accept periodontal patients without a referral, you can call us directly when something feels off.
Treatment begins with a careful look at your gums. During your exam, we check how your gum tissue fits around each tooth, look for tartar buildup, and talk with you about what you've been noticing at home. Dr. Gregory Liberatore and Dr. Jonathan Montag will explain what they find in plain language. That way you understand the reasons behind a recommendation, not just the recommendation itself.
For many patients, the next step is scaling and root planing, a deep cleaning that removes plaque and tartar from below the gumline and smooths the root surfaces. Depending on your needs, we may also discuss laser dentistry, which is part of the care we provide. Some situations call for more specialized work. One example is crown lengthening, which reshapes gum tissue around a tooth. We'll explain whether any of these options apply to you.
Situations That Bring Patients to Us
No two mouths are the same, and the reasons people seek gum care vary widely. We often help patients in situations like these:
- Gums that bleed when brushing or flossing, or that look red and swollen
- Persistent bad breath or a lingering bad taste
- Gums that seem to be pulling back from the teeth
- Overdue cleanings after several years away from the dentist
- Implants or dentures that need healthy surrounding tissue
- Discomfort that feels urgent and can't wait for a routine visit
If you're dealing with sudden pain or swelling, we offer emergency dental appointments. If you've simply been putting off care and feel uneasy about it, please know we don't judge. Our goal is to meet you where you are and help you move forward comfortably.
Families are welcome here too. Because we care for patients from age two through adulthood, parents can bring the whole household to one office. For some families, that makes keeping up with everyone's gum health much simpler.
Aftercare and Long-Term Maintenance
Healthy gums depend on what happens after treatment as much as on the treatment itself. After a deep cleaning, we'll walk you through home care that fits your routine, including brushing and flossing techniques and areas to give extra attention. Your gums may feel sensitive for a short time, and we'll tell you what to watch for and when to call us.
Many patients continue with periodontal maintenance, a cleaning schedule designed for people who have been treated for gum disease. These visits let our hygienist keep pockets clean and let us track changes over time. If you have dental implants, our implant maintenance care helps look after the tissue around them as well. Results depend on your individual condition and consistent home care, so we'll keep you informed at every visit.
Payment, Insurance, and Financing
We are an out-of-network office, which means we don't participate directly with insurance plans. We do file claims on your behalf, so you can use any out-of-network benefits your plan provides. We also welcome self-pay patients and are happy to review costs with you before treatment begins.
For patients who prefer to spread out payments, we accept CareCredit financing. Our front office team can answer questions and help you understand your options. We want you to focus on your health without surprises.
Caring for Gums Across Our Region
We welcome patients from Mayfield, Gloversville, Northville, Broadalbin, Amsterdam, Speculator, and nearby communities. Our team uses modern equipment chosen with safety and efficiency in mind, in a calm, comfortable setting where gentle, personalized care comes first.
